THE ATHLETES HEART

Athletic Heart Examination - While most athletes engage in pre-participation sports examinations, most do not include a comprehensive heart evaluation to ensure that the athlete is "safe to play."  The key to reducing unexpected sudden cardiac death is to differentiate a 'normal athlete's heart' from a one with disease or unknown congenital abnormalities.  Don't take a chance....WCMMC is dedicated to your athletic success and well-being!  Click on the St. Lukes Health System icon above to enter the St. Lukes Screening site.

COMMUNITY HEALTH

The Henry County Health Center, Inc. (HCHC) is working toward building a new facility for the betterment of the community. The current building was built in 1899 and is not a user friendly building to serve Henry County Citizens.  The goal is to build a facility that is more accessible.   Click on the Public Health Icon to find out how the Health Center serves all of the citizens in Henry County.

The E. W. Thompson (EWT) State School for the Severely Disabled is a school for children ages 6-21 who are severely disabled; they usually have multiple disabilities.  Students are referred through an eligibility process by local school districts.  At present EWT serves eight (8) school districts totaling 25 students.

The school offers a functional curriculum preparing students with life skills beyond their 21 years.  Typically there is one teacher and two aides to administer the IEP (Individual Educational Plan) which is unique to each student.  Students also receive physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy on site.  When needed, a behavior consultant and vision consultant is available.  EWT also provides adaptive physical education for its students.

There is a building administrator who administrators the school policies using state standards.  In addition to faculty and staff a hot lunch program is provided through the state school food service program as well as curb to curb transportation service for student.  All buses have monitors on them to assist students.

The local PTO has been sponsoring fund raisers to improve the playground and bring it up to ADA standards so the student can use it more efficiently.  To the person just driving by the playground may look OK, but approximately 50% of our students are non-ambulatory.  Many of those who are ambulatory are have unsure footing.  The grass does not allow these students to use the playground with confidence.  With the improvements they will be able to have full use of the facility.  So far the PTO has amassed more than $10,000.  With the help of the state for excavation, concrete and fencing, they need to raise more than $60,000 to complete the project.

Special thanks of appreciation go out to all who help us meet our goal.  Your donation is important to “our” kids.

Thank you.
